JV water polo entered with confidence in their rivalry matchup against the Hillsdale Knights. On Oct. 12, the Scots outlasted their opponent winning the game 10-6 scoring 5 goals in the final period.
In the first quarter, the Scots came out firing scoring the first two goals both by sophomore center Tyler Rachal.
Varsity water polo had a lot to prove to themselves and their coach this week against a strong Mills team. On Oct. 27, the Scots showed grit, coming out with the 9-6 win against rivals Mills.
The Scots came out early and kept the pace throughout the game. The fast tempo was in favor of the Scots as they have a much deeper bench and especially for the Scots defense. The anchor of the defense being senior Daniel Zorb.
Scots enter season with high expectations, new players
The Scots are looking to build a dominant team that is poised and ready to make a deep run in CCS playoffs.
This year, Scots have the biggest expectations for their prized varsity soccer team that they have had in a long time. After an early round loss last year in the CCS playoff bracket, this year’s team have much larger dreams this time around.
Although this was a preseason exhibition game, neither of the teams seemed to know that. The intensity throughout the game was extremely high, right down to the last shot.
The lack of practice was very prevalent in the Scots play during the game, as they had numerous turnovers and mental mistakes. Carlmont loss to Sacred Heart Prep 47-32 on Dec. 1 despite keeping it close through the 3rd quarter.
Although they were playing in a professional stadium, in front of a crowd, and with a man down on defense, the Scots didn’t seem to mind at all. On Dec. 9, they beat Saint Ignatius 1-0 on a late game goal by senior captain Dro Avetian.
The game started off slow and full of mental mistakes by both teams. The Scots came out of the gate with their defensive line pushed way up high to put the pressure on. SI started by sitting back and waiting for an opportunity to counterattack. This led to the possession being one-sided in the first half in favor of SI.
With the starting senior center-back Jack Mclean out with a knee injury, the team had to rally behind junior Ethan Leong and boy did he step up. On Feb. 8 the Scots beat Menlo-Atherton 3-2 on a late go-ahead penalty shot goal by senior captain Dro Avetian.
The game got off to a roaring start as Avetian scored in the seventh minute in extraordinary fashion, taking on multiple defenders and finishing in the bottom right corner of the goal with a tap in. This goal was only shadowed by an equally beautiful finish by M-A as half-time approached.
On March 1, the Scots took down Monterey High School winning in penalty kicks for the second straight game, and for the second straight game, keeper Peyton Young made back-to-back saves for the win.
The game started off great as Dro Avetian, a senior, scored in the 17th minute to put the Scots up 1-0. Just as halftime approached, Monterey countered Avetian’s goal with an absolute beauty of a shot from about 30 yards out, placing it in the upper left corner. Young had no chance to save it.
The Scots displayed a promising performance, even though they went down in straight sets, the future definitely looks bright. On March 16, The Scots lost to the Aragon Dons 3-0 in set count.
The game never seemed to be out of reach for the Scots, but it was apparent from the first point that it was going to be an uphill battle when the Scots lost a point on a pre-serve position violation. Unforced errors were the difference in this game with the Scots having way to0 many, and the Dons having zero.
After the 2017 season, the boys varsity lacrosse team holds second place in league standings, only behind Burlingame.
With the season over, the team has taken time to reflect on how they did on completing their goals and beating their rivals.
“The goal for our team was to win. There were little things here and there that we worked on as a whole but for the most part, we all worked together really well and all that was left for us to work on was to win the games,” said Harris Branch, a junior and lacrosse team member.
